Unintended Consequences

Whoever said that "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" should get royalties from the environmental movement. We have seen that banning DDT (against scientific evidence) has lead to the unnecessary deaths of countless people in malaria and dengue fever plagued areas. In an attempt to reduce carbon monoxide from car emissions the government mandated that methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) be added to gasoline. MTBE reduced fuel economy, resulting in more fuel being burned than was necessary. It was banned because it poisoned ground water if underground tanks leaked.

Now comes word that the Army's "green" training ammunition may be carcinogenic. In the 1990s the Army came up with a lead free round to be used in training. In order for the training to be of any value the round had to have the same ballistic characteristics as the lead rounds used in combat.

Sometimes the devil you know really is better than the devil you don't know.

A Modest Proposal - Kill the Fat People

Yes! Round them up... According to one of the authors of a letter appearing in the Lancet, they are killing the planet:

We are all becoming heavier and it is a global responsibility, Edwards said. Obesity is a key part of the big picture.

What Big Picture? Global Warming

Yes. Really.

See the article and commentary at Watts Up with That
and note the picture used to put a human face on this tragedy... Three guesses on who they picked as the poster boy.

In their own words

From an environmentalist website comes a list of what they see as wrong with Sarah Palin, under the heading "The eco-rundown on Alaska guv Sarah Palin, John McCain's veep pick". I am not onboard with intelligent design (assuming their point is true), but all of their other items sound like selling points to me:

Here are some quick snapshots of Palin's record on issues related to energy and the environment:

  • Opposed a statewide ballot initiative to prohibit or restrict new mining operations that could affect salmon in the state's streams and rivers
  • Has pushed to build a natural-gas pipeline from Alaska's North Slope
  • Got the state legislature to pass a bill to provide each Alaskan $1,200 to help with energy costs
  • Sued the Interior Department over its decision to list the polar bear as a threatened species
  • Has proposed eliminating Alaska's gas tax
  • Has pushed to open Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling
  • Has created a committee to forge Alaska's climate-change strategy, and has made Alaska an observer (but not a member) of the Western Climate Initiative
  • Opposes a windfall profits tax on oil companies
  • Was the ethics commissioner of the Alaska Gas and Oil Conservation Commission from 2003 to 2004
  • Lifelong angler and hunter
  • Husband is an oil production operator for BP on Alaska's North Slope
  • Started Alaska's Petroleum Systems Integrity Office, an oversight and maintenance agency for the state's oil and gas equipment, facilities, and infrastructure
  • Chairs the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, a multistate panel "that promotes the conservation and efficient recovery of domestic oil and natural gas resources while protecting health, safety and the environment"
  • Believes intelligent design should be taught along with evolution in science classes
Read their post and decide for yourself...

But some of the things that they find troubling are quite telling... "Life long angler and hunter"... My God, what other EVIL lurks in her heart? She wants to eliminate the gas tax? Oh, her husband in an Oil Enabler! The soul-less cad...
